Chinese tainted milk scandal execs get death penalty

Post by Philondra » 22 Jan 2009, 19:51

Holy crap.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090122/ap_ ... inted_milk

Now generally speaking, I am disgusted with the way that when corporate leaders do bad and/or unethical things, they get like 5 years prison at a minimum security facility, while the people they screwed over have to like with the ramifications and/or the underlings take the brunt. It's bad in the western world and even worse here in Japan.

But wow, death penalty for two of the executives is pretty harsh. I wonder if there are some facts that came to light during the trial that we aren't aware of?

I think that was the case where they were aware of what was happening.
Poison me once, shame on me?

Although a few infants died and hundreds were very ill, so i am kinda undecided as to whether the penalty is appropriate.
it does seem very harsh but when it affects a whole nation...

With six babies confirmed dead and some 300,000 others nationwide suffering kidney stones and other problems from drinking melamine

Rightfully so.

The fact that they knew what they where doing could harm people, but they didn't care because, hey lets face it, who cares about the consumer its all about making the moneys.

Good riddance.

I suspect this is being done as an example type-thing.

Hmmm... curious.

Coming from a chinese background with access to chinese news, the death penalty for only two of the executives is seen as light. People in china get executed for minor things such as committing robbery.

The problem is though, so much unethical practices go on in China that they need to be made an example of. It isn't uncommon in their daily news to have articles about rival shops posioning their competitors products to reduce competition.

Sucks for the one sixth of the entire world that does, I guess.
