Children on Child Porn Charges

Props to Triple J's Hack, who reported months ago on the possibility of this happening.

So what's the deal? Technically, the kids were (variously) soliciting, manufacturing, distributing and receiving child porn.

But is bringing those kids up on charges counter to the spirit of the law?

Weird times.

I love the part where it says that the students will likely have to register as sex offenders for 10 years. Let me get this straight:

14-15 year old girls take pictures of themselves herself and send them to a 16-17 year old boys. They do the same for the girls. Now they are each in possession of naked pictures of minors. This is possession of child pornograph and, according to the article, the students will be tried and, if prosecuted, they will have to register as sex offenders for a minimum of 10 years.

So, it's OK if the girls and boys fuck like bunnies, but it's NOT OK if they have pictures of each other naked. Great job, legislators. Fantastic reasoning you've got there.

I hate shit like that, it's so stupid.... Unless the dude had the photo on his background or something, isn't it kind of illegal for the teacher to go searching through his phone?

In NZ it wouldn't matter I don't think, there's some kind of "it's acceptable at a younger age if you are within a few years of one another" thing. Like the limit got sex is 16, but a 15 and 14 year old can have CONSENSUAL sex.

That's how it is for sex in both Aus and the US too... but I suspect your laws regarding child porn will be the same as ours; the letter of the law states that they commit a crime by taking and possessing those photos.

Now we'll see if the justice system interprets those laws in a sane fashion.
