http://sites.google.com/site/stopthecleanfeed/protests

can't be bothered quoting it but...

hows this logic for you.

These people are organising a protest against an internet filter that will block you from viewing anything 'the man' doesn't want you to see that doesn't have an opt out option.

But, to access the page where all the details are you have to opt in to access a section of the web that is for all intents and purposes blacklisted every pleb around.

MADNESS.

anyway protests are planned for the 13th. any bets we'll see 4chan images on the evening news?

This is vaguely on topic, I guess.

Now sure, the guy is viewing Simpsons porn, and that's a little disturbing.

But the interpretation of law here is creative to say the least - who is the judge protecting with this decision?

His claim is that it could lead to the guy committing an actual crime.

Which suggests to me that the guy hasn't committed an actual crime. There's also no question that he was intending on committing one; the judge just sort of makes this leap in his mind that he might.

I'm sorry, but if we're accepting that cartoon characters can be "considered people" then I know a lot of animators who should be in prison for murder.

The male figures in the cartoons had what appeared to be human genitalia, as did the mother and the girl depicted in the cartoons.
Maybe I'm just a little too overconfident, but I' tend to *know* if something I'm looking at is a penis or a vagina. Unless the argument is "well, I guess it could be a finger...?" in which case we're talking about something totally different.

I think its a tad disturbing. If he got nabbed for having paedophilia on his computer and it was just a cartoon I don't think thats right at all >.>
I read about this in the paper yesterday, and was like shit!!! I better tell hatter to be careful cos he reads a lot of comics.
I dunno maybe the guy was just a sleaze or maybe it was a mistake and he had the image but it still seems harsh. But then again I don't draw that video games = violence. Or listening to metal means I'm depressed and Suicidal BS either.

Wonder what they'd convict hatter of for his johnny the homicidal maniac comic collection >< the shit in it has to be worse than 1 cartoon image.

I however do agree that arcade shooters (point gun at screen, pull trigger) do lower the barriers for the commision of a violent act.

it's possible the arguments ran the same here.
by simulating the abuse of children he was less likely to control his behaviour.

I don't buy that argument. What sort of studies have you read supporting it?

I don't buy it really either. How many of us here play a violent game? spend hours killing things in it? I duno I've never gone outside and thought man I'd love to MF that fuckers ass or something. I was angry before I played video games and still can be. I think thats more stuff that happenned in my family as a child then to a video game relating to any mental illness I may or maynot have :O

On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society (Paperback) by Lt Col. Dave Grossman (US Army )

When conroy first played the KP card, I did go looking for evidence that possession of kidddie porn leads to the commision of child abuse but all i could find was a ~66% associative link between the 2. (ie 66% of those who had kiddie porn had commited an act of child abuse at some time.

I'll have to borrow the book off you, but remain unconvinced.

A list of the major Oz ISPs and whether or not they put in an expression of interest to participate in live trials.

Note that iPrimus seem to fail at everything in their line of work - how is it they haven't folded yet?

Relax; as I understand it, Optus reneged faster than a Catholic schoolgirl at an underage dance:

"Yes, we'll do the live trial. Oh... but um, only for some customers. And they can opt out. Except now we've changed our minds and it won't be for any actual customers."

In light of the (totally unexpected! - if you're Senator Conroy) limp response to live trials, and the fact that any trials that go ahead won't be so much "live" as "not live at all", it's likely the whole trial thing will be canned.

Attaboy, Conroy! We don't need no stinkin' trials - we have morality on our side! Bite the pillow, Australia, the filtering is going in dry!

(apologies to Karj et al)
