There are so many people I mention it to at work, and they can't believe.

Most are Left wing though, most are teachers =\

If you guys hadn't posted about it i'd think nothing was wrong.
It's certainly not getting the attention it deserves, in many respects.

What's terrifying is that this is so obviously reprehensible to those who understand the web and the internet, but so obviously not for those who are ignorant.

Unfortunately for us, the latter group are the ones who tend to run for parliament.

The good news is that one independent senator has come out against it (after tentatively reacting positively), and the opposition has also stated they're now against it.

I'd be interested to see how many labor MPs actually think it's a good idea "off the record". Partisan politics is a wonderful thing.

http://www.news.com.au/technology/story ... 39,00.html
THE Federal Government's proposed internet censorship regime is not the silver bullet to stop child pornography, Communications Minister Stephen Conroy said today.

A blacklist of more the 2000 websites, including child pornography sites, banned by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), was published on the whistleblower website Wikileaks over a week ago.

Critics said the leak showed the Government should step back from mandatory filtering and that the plan would not solve the problem of child pornography, which is often spread over peer-to-peer networks rather than the web.

Senator Conroy said the Government had never claimed the filter itself would stop child pornography.

"We've never tried to pretend that this was a silver bullet, we've never tried to suggest this was the sole solution,'' Senator Conroy said.

The aim of the proposed filtering is to block material that is already illegal and is refused classification, he said.

Senator Conroy said other forms of technology could be used to crack peer-to-peer pedophile rings.

"If I stood up anywhere and said 'hey, this filter will block peer-to-peer' then rightfully I should be ridiculed,'' he said.

"I've never said that ... it is not designed to deal with peer-to-peer.''

Speculation about the Government's plans to block political content was also incorrect, he said.

"I don't want to block political content, (I've) never said we were going to block political content.''

Senator Conroy said he had been accused of introducing censorship.

"This is patently nonsense; if you read what is actually in out policy (which) we took to the election, if you listen to what people claim we've said we're going to do, the gulf could not be wider.''

Opposition communications spokesman Nick Minchin said Senator Conroy's comments were at odds with previous statements.

A response from Senator Conroy to a question on his own department's website shows he was clearly trying to backpedal in relation to filtering peer-to-peer networks, Senator Minchin said

Senator Minchin was referring to a comment from Senator Conroy on the Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy website in which states that filtering peer-to-peer networks would form part of the Government's internet filtering trial.

"Technology that filters peer-to-peer and BitTorrent traffic does exist and it is anticipated that the effectiveness of this will be tested in the live pilot trial," Senator Conroy says on the website.

Senator Minchin said Senator Conroy was now trying to rewrite history by suggesting he had never said the proposed filter was designed to deal with peer-to-peer.

"He cannot even get his trials underway and judging from the manner in which he has bungled this process to date, there is little public confidence in his ability to implement this policy without adversely affecting law-abiding internet users, or without imposing new and unreasonable burdens on industry," Senator Minchin said.
That's a lot of typing errors...

Insight?

The ABC's Q&A was disappointing - they needed someone there with the expertise to call Conroy out on his fail.

That happened tonight lol, was quiet funny.

Not sure why the government is allowing Q&A on it, the more questions that are asked, the more flawed the plan is made out to be... well not made out to be, it is fail.

Holy crap, the Greens said something both sensible and coherent and idealistic.

I think I have a tear forming /sniff.

But we should totally not be worried about something like that happening here.

Because... um... hey, you don't want to let child pornographers get away right? Didn't think so.

I was unaware that there were non-teenage 15yr olds in existence.

i was refering to the "people" not the "15 year old"

is it wrong for a 15 year old to have pictures of a 15 year olds tits... i don't think so..not criminally wrong anyway.

but older people. law is the law..

Actually, it's criminal to have pictures of 15 year old tits (sexualised) no matter how old you are.

Ergo, sending nude photos of yourself to your S.O. when you're both 15 will net you a charge of distributing CP, and your S.O. a charge of possession.

As crazy as it seems, it's necessary to do these sorts of things - we don't allow a 15 year old to star in soft porn, and with MMS and social networking, distributing electronic images of yourself in the buff amounts to the same thing.
