There's a lot of interest at the moment in augmented reality stuff, so it wouldn't surprise me if this were research work for a department working on that as a larger overall project.
I suspect augmented reality will spring up on us faster than we expect - remember when people didn't know what MP3s were?
And then they still didn't, but everyone wanted an iPod?
