Quick question for Cart

Hey, was just having a look around at some web hosting and thought you might have more of an idea on who are some of the better providers out there.

We currently have 2 websites held with MelbourneIT (lol) and now a 3rd but they are being cunts about installing a .dll for us and want to push us into a dedicated box hosting, from what I've read on whirlpool etc it's about $500 a month.

What other good hosting companies are out there that have decent support and generous SLA.

*edit* - this site is asp based so need windows dedicated boxes with MS SQL (and ASPUpload but that's normally included anyway)

Given we host all our own stuff, I honestly don't know.

Currently, all our boxen are *nix based, so we canny host you.

As far as dedicated hosting goes: with our host, you'd be looking at a minimum of around $300 a month for a start, with 400 gigs of bandwidth usage... how much do you usually churn through?

Not that much, to be honest we would only really need shared hosting or semi-dedicated hosting, the real problem is the site was designed by a company affiliated with the current *live* hosting company (note not MelbIT) and they have used some .dll's to tidy up the code on the CMS.

Now I cant be fucked re-designing a website just to remove the use of a .dll, especially when VIT will be probably be re-badged in the next 12-24 months, so I'm currently asking MelbIT how much it is for their VPS/Dedicated hosting but looking at other ISP's as well.

At the moment is seems like my work has been for nothing and we will probably stay with the current hosting (BaseLocations)

Thanks for your help cart.

Eh, good luck. The state of hosting in Oz is pretty pisspoor. It might pick up in Augustish when the PIPE to Guam is finished, but I wouldn't hold my breath :-(

Also, we'd host you via some kind of Mono ASP thing, but that'd be like duct taping a BMW engine into a Lada - funny, but not productive.

Yeah, it's rather shit atm, I had a look at a few US hosts but considering we are a government body, and from previous monthly reports that about 97% of the traffic is from within Australia, the choice to host outside of Aus isn't really a point I can put across strongly. But then again it's not a money issue, but there's no point in moving the site if it's going to cost us the same/more.

With your hosting I wasn't even sure if you did website hosting (I know you could) but I thought you were more specialised in like vent/game servers, was basically asking because your in the industry!

Thanks again for your help cart.

There are more Aussie sites hosted in the US than you'd think - but it's generally only if the site has high traffic and is not for profit (ala http://www.cybergamer.com.au/). The cost of a few terabytes of bandwidth makes it worthwhile hosting overseas, even though there's almost no US traffic

We do web hosting, but there's currently very little control for end users - there's so much other stuff to do, we hardly ever have time to finish the web control panel.
As a result, we're not pushing the hosting side of things as much as I'd like to.

Our game control panel is pretty pro though :-P
