Hooray for downtime! 2008-11-21 11am ST onward

I will be (attempting) to upgrade our forums from phpBB2 to phpBB3 sometime today.

Despite claims that it is "relatively simple" and "foolproof", it may be an involved process - there might be downtime for under an hour, or most of the day.

phpBB3 is far more complete as a forum than phpBB2 was, and by necessity has a much more complex administration process; for that reason, the forums may be "up", but locked.

If this occurs, I will post an explanatory note and an estimated downtime.

If I don't survive, tell my wife "hello".
Who do you think you are? If you'd stopped winning, you could have been the Biggest Loser, if you gave up, you could have been a Survivor, if you'd stopped reading Orwell, you could have been on Big Brother!

I will miss my forum crack while I am at work. However, it is for the greater good.

And we're done!

Let me know if there are any problems/irregularities, and I'll begin planning the move to a new host (which will hopefully speed up loading time).

Hmm... what's the problem? Overall theme? Colours?

I'll slap on some new themes after lunch - give you a choice.

For gods sake put the fucking avatars and shit on the left like a NORMAL forum ><. It's driving me bonkers already. =P

Well I can only assume since we can post and stuff the forums are "working" but perhaps not "working as intended".

Not to be smug or anything, I did give you guys ample bracing time:
I wrote: *phpBB3 theme:
The default is prosilver.
Similar to our current theme (which also happens to be the phpBB2 default), but a few major changes - poster info switches sides for eg.
I can probably do a little hacksawing and shift all the details to the left - but really the only reason anyone wants them on the left is because you're used to it.

It's very easy to get used to this reverse-polish style - it means the important post text is immediately in your field of vision as you read through.

But I'm happy to shift things across if it's the will of the many.

Don't care about the will of the many. It's the will of the Alleycat on the roll here. I gave it a shot and as soon as I looked I was tempted to write a post saying that the forum isn't displaying properly. But yeah. maybe it can be tied into a theme? Do themes come with that sort of functionality? To be honest I'm surprised the control panel doesn't have an option for left/right side avatar frames. Seems like a fairly important thing for people to change.

It's honestly not - you'll be surprised how quickly it becomes natural to have them on the right.

Pretty much all element positioning is controlled via the theme, it's not universal. I'll scout around and find something left-handed for the luddites :-P

1) Click "User Control Panel" in the top left.
2) Click the "Board Preferences" tab.
3) Change "My board style" from "prosilver" to "lefty-silver" "prosilver_left"

Et voila.

I've managed to cockup the style controlling the "online" image - so that'll be hidden avatars for now (you'll just see a strip in the top left corner of the post info :-()

Minor detail afaic - I'll fix it when I fix it.

Let me know if anything goes hideously wrong while using this style.

Edit:
Okay, lefty-silver no longer exists - use "prosilver_left" - someone better than me had this prepackaged as a theme.

Yay.
