Today's outage more or less confirms a hardware or firmware fault to be the reason behind the day-long downtime that we seem to get every month or so.
I'm looking at 2 options:
1) Write a horrible, yet ingenius software hack to prod the hardware into working when something goes wrong. This would result in downtime that is not noticeably different from the semi-regular DNS update changes we get from time to time (the odd ~3 minute blocks where the site can't be found).
2) Replace the hardware.
In terms of man hours, 2 is the sensible "Russian" approach, and 1 is the "NASA" approach.
However, given my time is comparitively worthless, and therefore "free", I'm inclined to look at a software solution.
What I'd like from you guys, is to find out how intrusive the DNS downtime blocks are - how commonly you get a "site not found" error, and how long that downtime is.
It *should* vary from person to person, and this is by no means definitive or scientific, but I just want an idea.
Cheers,
Cart

Who do you think you are? If you'd stopped winning, you could have been the Biggest Loser, if you gave up, you could have been a Survivor, if you'd stopped reading Orwell, you could have been on Big Brother!

Someone (Phil?) mentioned they'd been having logout issues recently (roughly since the last server reboot).
Has anyone else been finding they've been prematurely logged out and/or had all the posts they'd read that session being flagged as unread again?

Perhaps this server is racist against Phil?
He so dreamy and exotic.

Interesting.
You using Opera too, Rico?
I've noticed I get less leeway with login times under Opera 9.51

something screwy at the ISP?
Everyone rolled out big DNS changes last week - might've been on the 8th (but it was coordinated and a Huge Deal).
