'Hello?'

'Hi honey. This is Daddy. Is Mommy near the phone?'

'No Daddy. She's upstairs in the bedroom with Uncle Paul.'
After a brief pause, Daddy says, 'But honey, you haven't got an Uncle
Paul.'

'Oh yes I do, and he's upstairs in the room with Mommy, right now.'
Brief Pause. 'Uh, okay then, this is what I want you to do. Put the
phone down on the table, run upstairs and knock on the bedroom door and
shout to Mommy that Daddy's car just pulled into the driveway.'

'Okay Daddy, just a minute.'

A few minutes later the little girl comes back to the phone. 'I did it
Daddy.'

'And what happened honey?'

'Well, Mommy got all scared, jumped out of bed with no clothes on and
ran around screaming. Then she tripped over the rug, hit her head on
the
dresser and now she isn't moving at all!' 'Oh my God!!!

What about your Uncle Paul?'
'He jumped out of the bed with no clothes on, too. He was all scared
and he
jumped out of the back window and into the swimming pool. But I guess
he
didn't know that you took out the water last week to clean it. He hit
the
bottom of the pool and I think he's dead.'

***Long Pause***

***Longer Pause***

***Even Longer Pause***

Then Daddy says, 'Swimming pool?

Is this 486-5731?'

No, this is 486-5713.....

Sorry, wrong number!!!!!!!!

That is actually based in real psychological research, Cart, and I found it to be an insightful (but really humorous) read.

It is very true that human beings have a limited number of people that they are able to consider in their "in-group" before it just all starts becoming a blur. For me, undeveloped social dimwit that I am, my cutoffpoint is probably somewhere closer to 15 instead of 150.

I few it more as a sort of concentric circle thing. At the closest level, I can feel genuine emotional and psychological attachment to around 3-5 people max.

The next circle out is bigger - maybe 15 or so, like you mentioned, but the awareness and attachment to the people in that MS is less.

And on and on, with some accepted movement within and between the circles depending on circumstance.

But I think the rough value of 150 for, say people whose funeral I'd attend, is about an accurate limit.

Quoth the Simpsons though:
Park Ranger wrote: But then, like people... some elephants are just... jerks...
As an aside, this author's writing style is something I envy - engaging enough to be funny and interesting, but poignant enough to be memorable afterward.

The git.

Probably only funny to a couple of people here, but to those it is, definitely worth reading.
