Re: U.S. Supreme Court Strikes Down DOMA
Aye, I was a little disappointed (though not surprised) about the limited Prop 8 ruling, but striking down DOMA was an awesome step forward, particularly given the basis of non-discrimination in the decision is going to make it a lot easier for others to challenge similar state-based crap. Very glad...

Re: "Victims of Legitimate Rape Don't Get Pregnant"
Interestingly enough, Paul Ryan (the Repub vice-presidential pick) co-signed legislation with this idiot about a year ago to distinguish between 'rape' and 'forcible-rape', with the intent to restrict the funding of abortion in cases of rape to just being in case of 'forcible rape'... Because if you...

Re: "Doctors for Family" - ho-hum
My interpretation is that marriage, while vaguely part of the picture, is mostly just a proxy battle. Allowing gay folk to get married implies that homosexuality has the imprimatur of the government, which implies it's ok, which means that being gay is ok. And there's a large subset of people that d...

Re: A step in the right direction
It's a step forward, which is nice, but yeah... not a huge one. Mind you, I'm pretty sure that any federal law allowing gay marriage would need to go through Congress, rather than via Presedential order and there's no chance in hell it would pass the Republican controlled house, or avoid a filibuste...

I'm torn between horror and amusement, but I think the overwhelming emotion is confusion that the move which appears to consist of hitting oneself in the groin is called the 'yoda'...

Re: Australian Government Survey - Same Sex Marriage
Generally agree Cart. And Lel, yeah I know, it's utterly horrible that the LNP is saying they'll turn back the civil unions legislation. I kind of hope that now it's been codified and couples have already entered into the unions, that civil rights groups would be able to argue that removing the righ...

Re: When you read it...
That was the intent of my correction. I wasn't trying to make it accurate, I was trying to clarify the important issue of girls dating toilet blocks.

I prefer to think it's missing parenthetical commas. "feared abducted by her ex-boyfriend, a school toilet block, has been found"

Yeah. I really didn't like the LotR movies, but that trailer has me all excited again.

Re: PC Parts Suppliers Brisbane
I tend to use either UMart (http://www.umart.com.au/) which is over in Milton, if I'm after cheap components, or Computer Alliance (www.computeralliance.com.au) out on Logan Road, at the north end of Mt Gravatt, if I'm after slightly better customer service (or a component that Umart lacks). Neither...

Re: Music / @Selten
Selten, you were commenting on enjoying soundtracks, so there's a good chance you've already heard this, but if not, Clint Mansell is hands down my favourite soundtrack composer (and he used to be in Pop Will Eat Itself, which is extra cool). He worked with Kronos Quartet and Mogwai on The Fountain ...

Music / @Selten
Selten didn't seem to instantly perk up at the mention of Tool, and suggested I link to music (though not necessarily to these guys), so on the off chance Selten and/or anyone else isn't aware of Tool (consider me a little confused, as I thought they were at a level of public awareness similar to Ni...

Re: Interesting read
That's pretty much a standard in all of the Abrahamic religions Judaism: According to the Torah, a man is forbidden from having sexual intercourse with a niddah, that is, a menstruating woman. This is part of the extensive laws of ritual purity described in the Torah. At one time, a large portion of...
